Baracoa, a relic of Cuban Architecture

The current historical centre of Baracoa city is the area that developed in 1899, as well as others merged in the republican epoch. They suffered an urbanizing process that makes it different from other historical centers of the rest of the Cuban villages.

Baracoa keeps its original aspect, a system of triangular squares, and important architectonic and urban treasures with cultural value, worthy to be preserved for the present and future generations of Cubans.

In Baracoa you can find houses of Spanish base with elements of Caribbean architecture and a construction mainly of wood. Relevant are: the typical houses of two floors of the XIX and XX centuries, the French roof and the Creole roof in red color creates a singular polychrome with the green of the vegetation and the blue of the Atlantic ocean

The most representative sites that keep the characteristics of past epochs are in this area, we can mention military constructions like Matachin Fort, La Punta, the Castle Seboruco of Santa Barbara, Los Torreones and the church “Nuestra señora de la Asunción”.

For the conservation of all this places, for its unique architecture and all the relics it treasures, Baracoa city was declared National Monument in October 10th 1978.
