Baracoa legends

Our ancestors, like ancient poets did, fantasized the surrounding world. They gave personality to the forests, rivers, mountains, stars and the entire sensitive universe that could be perceived and seen. They gave us a fascinating world that has been recreated generation after generation, and is part of the culture inherited by our land, and which now I transmit to you in this two legends, told so many times from one people to another.

The Money legend

More than two thousand years ago the lavas of the Vesuvius immortalized the lovers of Pompey, the waters of the Honey river have weaved a beautiful story that will live for centuries in Baracoa and its people.

The story says that a delicate young woman was called Honey for the color of her eyes and her sweet behavior. One day she was taking a bath in the river when a sailor saw her, he was delighted for her beauty, and fell in love immediately and so he told her.

They fell in love, and one day the sailor had to leave and Honey cried so much that filled the water of the river making it sweeter each day. The sailor, seeing her in such conditions, postponed his trip with the justification of taking baths in the sweet river that he could not ever leave; they finally married and were very happy.

This is the legend of the Honey River, and it is said that the person that baths in the waters of Honey River, get married in Baracoa and stays there for ever.

Polimitas legend

It tells the story of the passion of a beautiful Indian and her leader. He loved her so much that wanted to pay homage to her by giving her a unique gift, something not seen before, not pearl, not jewel.

One day, he went out to conquer the colors of the sun, the green of the mountains, the pink of the flowers, the white of the sea waves; but being surprised by the darkness he could not conquer the blue of the sky and had to accept the black of the night. His lover was so delighted with the singular creation that gave it her cadence, the tenderness of her words and benevolence of her temper.

That is why it is said that the Polimitas are natural jewels from Cuba and give great benefit although they are never blue.
