Baracoa (1512), known as the Prime Cuban Village, was the first of the seven villages founded by the Spanish Diego Velasquez, it was also the first capital of Cuba.
Its sea, covered mountains and abundant rivers make an attractive natural scenery combined with historical and cultural elements.
The access to the city through the road la Farola is just a prelude of its varied attractions. Located at the east region of the Cuban island, it has become an excellent tourist destiny in Guantanamo province.
Baracoa keeps the Parra Cross that the admiral Christopher Columbus planted there in 1942, this cross is one of the 29 left by the sailor in all the Spanish America.
Nowadays Baracoa is a picturesque town of 900 kilometers square with forests similar to those of the conquest time and it is identified by an elevation baptized with the name El Yunque of Baracoa.
Visiting the city is a good option for any visitor, because he has to travel through the Farola, a road full of curves, constructed in the first half of 1960. It has 11 bridges hanging to the sea and its maximum height is in the place known as Altos de Cotilla, 600 meters above the sea level. Besides the city has an international airport in which naves of all sizes operate.
Baracoa keeps the evidence of a solid system of colonial fortresses that defended the city from pirates and corsairs, like Matachin fortress, Punta and Seboruco, Torreones of Joa and Caguase and the castle of the villa that is now a comfortable hotel.
Besides its parochial church the city keeps the only Cruz of Parra (first Christian symbol in the island) of the 29 that the admiral Christopher Columbus placed in several sites during his discovering trips to the called New World.
Important sites for any visitor are: Duaba monument, place in which the General of the Liberator Army Jose Maceo Grajales, one of the most relevant heroes of the Cuban history, disembarked on December 1rst 1895; and the rivers Miel, Duaba and Yumuri, all good opportunities for a boat trip
Other possibilities for tourists are Maguana beach, La Maquina Terraces and the National Park Alejandro de Humboldt, national monument located in the mountain Moa-Sagua-Baracoa that has the largest rivers of Cuba and the best protected forests of the country. |
