US Military Base in Gitmo a Disgrace

Guantanamo (Venceremos) - The US military base in the illegally occupied Cuban territory of Guantanamo is an insult to the island people and should be closed, Maria Socorro Gomes, president of the World Peace Council, stated.

  Addressing the Seminar on Peace for the Abolition of Foreign Military Bases taking place in that Cuban city, the Brazilian delegate said the history of those enclaves is linked to the imperial geopolitical rule and national wealth.

The naval base in Guantanamo, turned into jail and center of tortures for eight years, reaffirms the hypocritical nature and the double standard of US policy, which has no moral to talk of democracy and human rights, she noted.

Gomes, also president of the Brazilian Council for Peace and Solidarity, said the work of military platforms is related to peoples' blackmails, coups d'Etat, tortures and murders.

The establishment of new bases in Honduras, Panama and Colombia proves the objective of those centers is to overthrow revolutionary movements and governments, and not the struggle against terrorism and drug trafficking, as Washington has put forward, Gomes stated.
