national park Alejandro de humbolt

Flora and fauna

More than one thousand species live in the area of the national park Alejandro de Humboldt, the third part of the species reported in Cuba and many of them are unique of this zone, representing the forests of the Caribbean region.

The wide ecosystem, the best conserved in the country, is almost virgin thanks to the lack of population and inaccessibility. The park is also an extraordinary collection of mountains, hills, valleys, rivers, bag bays, islands and coral reefs.

Humbolt is not only one of the sites of greatest diversity in the country, but also in the and the world.

More than1000 species of plants with flowers and 145 ferns have been identified, the third part of the species reported in Cuba are endemic of the this area.

The fauna is also abundant, diverse and endemic. The forests of the region constitute refugee of a great variety of animals, vertebrates and invertebrates. Several species of amphibious, reptiles, arachnids exclusive of the place has been identified.

Among the birds is relevant the population of parrots (Amazona leucocephala ), which are in danger of extinction. Other birds like the woodpecker (Campephilus principalis bairdi) have very difficult situation, it is thought to be extinguished; there is also an endemic sparrow hawk (Chondrohierax wilsoni)whose population has reduced so much there are only a few couples of them.

The Tocororo (Priotelus temnurus), the national Cuban bird; the cartacuba(Todus multicolor) and the green Carpenter (Xiphidiopicus percussus) are species exclusive of our country that beautify the landscape of the park with their attractive colors and songs.

Cuba is a country rich in big mammals, but we also count with small ones like the almiqui (Solenodon cubanus), found rarely in the most natural places of the park. Other important mammals in the area are the jutia (Capromys sp), and the manati (Trichechus m.manatus), this one  is found in places not visited by men.

The rivers of the park constitute the habitat of several species of fish of sweet water, we can mention for instance the Gambusia (Gambusia punctata) and the Joturo (Cyclasomaramsdeni), which are among the autochthonous fish of our fauna.
