Funeral wreaths from the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Commander
in Chief Fidel Castro, and Cuban President Raul Castro, paid tribute to deceased singer-
songwriter Sara Gonzalez at the Cuban Music Institute.
Also sending flowers to the funeral service were Daniel Ortega, President of the Republic
of Nicaragua; Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez; Cuban Culture Minister Abel Prieto; Prima
Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso, and cultural institutions in the country.
Since Thursday morning, artists and the common people have paid tribute in dissimilar ways
to the most important female voice of the Cuban New Song Movement.
A cantata was offered by some of her beloved friends accompanied by their guitars, among
them singer-songwriters Pepe Ordaz, Augusto Blanca, Marta Campos, Augusto Enriquez and Eduardo
Sosa.
Particularly significant was the tribute top Cuban pianist Frank Fernandez paid to Sarah,
while interpreting tunes from Schubert’s Ave Maria, and Perla Marina, by Sindo Garay.
Sara Gonzalez developed an outstanding career as a singer, linked to the New Song Movement
from her early years as a performer. She was also part of the Cuban Film Institute’s
Experimental Sound Group.
She represented the island in many stages from around the world, but above all from Latin
America, a continent she was very close to due to the themes of her melodies.
During her over 40 years of prolific artistic career she recorded a dozen albums under
Cuban labels, and due to her praiseworthy work she was granted prizes and acknowledgements,
among them the Felix Varela Order in First Degree, the National Culture Award, and a Replica
of General Maximo Gomez’ Machete.
